The Chinatown in Victoria
Victoria's Chinatown is one of Canada's earliest Chinatowns, with its origins dating back as early as 1858. While Canada hosts numerous well-established Chinatowns in nearly every major city due to its significant Chinese population, Victoria's Chinatown holds a distinctive and unforgettable charm. Its allure stems from its historical ups and downs—early Chinese immigrants, who initially prospered here through railway construction, established bustling businesses, creating a vibrant atmosphere in Victoria's Chinatown. However, with the rapid development of Vancouver City, many Chinese immigrants moved there, leaving behind the old houses in Victoria. As the Chinese population declined, the splendor of Chinatown faded. Today, many shops have changed ownership, and only the sign bearing the words "Tung Tze Gate" reminds passersby of the place where Chinese immigrants once united and struggled to survive in a foreign land.
